We are an area wide network of non-profit, civic, faith-based, governmental, non-
governmental, voluntary, and service focused organizations and individuals.  We exist to
positively impact Newton County through compassionate stewardship. We come together to
share and gather information about available resources, to identify unmet needs within the
county, and match needs with resources.
Currently, Community Matters has a total of 45 members representing 30 organizations and
individuals. Attendance at monthly meetings varies but averages 16 to 20 each month.
Our executive committee members: Chair – Jimmy Dale Huskey, Vice Chair – John Kent,
Treasurer – Lois Cornwell, Secretary – Janice Mann, At-Large Member – Pat Dixon, At-Large
Member – Tammy Gragg
We have several Task Groups that work together on focused needs. Currently these include
Volunteer Coordination, Communication/Promotion, Resources, Housing, and Disaster
Preparedness and Response.
Our objectives are to:
 Foster awareness among participants of available resources, services as well as
volunteer opportunities and availability throughout Newton County.
 Identify unmet needs of Newton County individuals, families and communities and
attempt to meet those needs through appropriate referrals for assistance.
 Network and build relationships with local, regional, state, and national affiliates and
partners to access additional resources.
 Foster better use/stewardship of resources by coordinating relief and support efforts
among our members.
 Foster awareness of Community Matters, our objectives, and our various projects.
